In fact, Kilowatt’s owner, Dean Gilford, has been named a “Patriotic Employer” by the United States Military.
The Patriotic Employer Award is given to business owners whose policies support the National Guard and Military Reserve. Soldiers on active duty nominate Patriotic Employers to show their appreciation.
“One of my Air Conditioner and Furnace installers has done two tours in Iraq,” says Dean. “He’s ready to go to Japan now. Whatever uncertainty he and his family have to deal with I want him to know his job will be waiting for him when he gets home. It’s the least I can do.”
Holding a civilian job for a soldier on active duty is an important way employers can help our country. Almost 1,500,000 people are currently on active duty with the military and over 1,250,000 soldiers stand ready in the seven reserve components. The Department of Veterans Affairs says that nearly 23 percent of veterans are jobless.
It’s difficult to accommodate the uncertain schedule of the National Reserve, but Dean Gilford is grateful to have found a way to support our troops.
“People who serve in the military have excellent leadership qualities. Believe me, I’m not selfless,” Dean assures us. “The U.S. Military is the ultimate training ground. Running through the desert in full military gear makes working in a hot attic or running duct under a house seems like a walk in the park.”
