Over the years, many estrus detection aids have been incorporated into commercial farms worldwide in the attempt to combat the issue of estrus detection. One of the most popular methods of combating this issue, at least on large farms, is the use of hormone synchronization or timed artificial insemination (TAI).
Timed-AI programs are designed to synchronize ovulation among a group of animals that are often in various stages of the estrous cycle at the initiation of the program. To accomplish this, most timed-AI programs utilize the sequential administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH-1), prostaglandin F2? (PGF), and a second administration of GnRH (GnRH-2).
Timed AI programs suffer from the following drawbacks:
1.A large number of cows must be gathered and secured to have the hormone shots administered – requiring considerable time and labor. Moreover, the stress related to the gathering, along with the time that the cow stands in headlock, have a marked negative effect on milk production.
2.Each synchronization program requires sequential administration of specific injections. A 95% percent compliance rate throughout a five shot program brings the ratio of correctly treated cows to about 77%. Therefore, the synchronization program practically leaves almost a quarter of the designated cows unaffected.
3.Once a synchronization program has been implemented, the farmer must wait about 30 days following insemination for a pregnancy check to see if the cow is pregnant or if additional treatment is needed. Considering that conception rates of around 40% are considered good, about 60% of cows need to be retreated.
4.Timed AI “forces” the cow to cycle, not allowing the farmer to find fundamental problems that are causing cows not to cycle. Therefore, the fundamental problem may be left unattended for long periods of time.
Fortunately, farmers can now rely on electronic heat detection to solve the problem of estrus detection efficiently, and without the unwanted effects that timed AI systems typically produce.
