You don’t need to be a dolphin to appreciate that water is important to us. We have to drink several litres of water every day to stay hydrated and healthy. Our bodies consist largely of water, but the water we get out of our kitchen tap is not all that we could wish it to be.
Unless you have a
water softener unit installed or are drinking mineral water every day, you will probably be dissatisfied with the water quality, particularly the taste, of the water you get. Hard water clogs up kettles, washing machines and dishwashers with scales formed from too much calcium in the hot and cold water we use every day; hard water makes our clothes uncomfortable to wear and damages delicate fabrics, unless we use fabric conditioners which are harmful to the environment. Even water pipes are damaged by the excess calcium and magnesium in hard water.
Hard water is also a long term health hazard sneaking up on us. It has a high sodium content, meaning that we should have a salt free water softener installed at great expense or use only mineral water at even greater costs.
How much salt is in that pizza or sandwich you’ve just given to your husband or to your kids? How much salt is in the glass of water your child has just drunk? Although human beings and animals need salt in their diet, we should not forget that the food industry is regularly overloading us with salt in processed foods. Since most people do not have a degree in nutrition or chemistry, it is hard to decipher some of the “gibberish” that food manufacturers call labelling.
If you have any concerns about the water delivered to your tap, you should get in touch with your local water company and find out what they are doing about the water quality in your area. If you are not satisfied with the progress they are making in replacing old pipes, mending leaks and the overall water purification process, then talk to experts about installing your own water purification system such as salt free water softeners.
It is particularly important to take action where hard water is a problem, since washing machines, dish washers, kettles and similar equipment will suffer severely from the hard water effect. Repairs are expensive – replacements even more so!
