Computer Networks Disaster Recovery Plan Saves the Day
QLD, Australia - In the wake of the recent natural disasters that seemed to hit Queensland again and again many businesses took a big hit. Online services went down, systems failed and hardware was lost.

These interruptions to business were widespread throughout Queensland. As the storms, cyclones and floods hit the region some data centres, telephone exchanges and major telecommunications peering points became totally inoperable.
Computer Networks’ clients were able to weather this subsequent storm of interruptions to business communications through Computer Networks’ Disaster Recovery Planning and Business Continuity Planning. While other unprepared businesses suffered badly - some even suffered total data loss - CN’s clients were able to go on with business as usual.
CEO of the CN Group, Brian Pereira, commented “Being the resilient nation we are, when disaster strikes we tend to want to go back to ‘business as usual’ as quickly as possible. Our clients were able to do this due to the customised Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plans we had in place.”
A key part of the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity planning Computer Networks created for their clients included utilising publicly available information such as state flood maps and high risk bushfire zones to establish what the threats are to business and how to overcome them.
“Offsite backups are extremely important to protect your business data from disasters. Having your data backed up onsite is kind of like having all your eggs in one basket – if your office gets hit by a disaster, your data does too,” said Pereira.
Implementation of distributed systems are another major part of Computer Networks’ Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plans so there is no single point of failure. This ensures backups are stored not just offsite, but in multiple locations.
“We can overcome disaster by implementing Cloud Computing solutions to ensure online systems are distributed over a number of servers; that way in the event of failure the others will pick up the slack,” said Pereira.
Computer Networks offers the following basic advice to businesses to help protect themselves in a time of disaster:
• Make sure your business is insured against major threats and disasters
• Shutdown and move any non essential systems to safety
• Set up alternative telecommunications channels
• Ensure all printed and offline materials have been digitised and stored
• Ensure your business has offsite backups
• Implementing custom cloud computing solutions
Disaster Recovery is pretty self explanatory and is the process of getting your business back on track after a disaster, using online backups and data saved off site.
Business Continuity Planning is a strategic approach to determine a business’ internal and external threats from which they identify the hard and soft assets required to prevent loss and assist in the recovery. Computer Networks customises these plans to each business client in order to identify and analyse potential threats, define impact scenarios and custom design the most cost effective disaster recovery solution.
