"“The country needs more foreign workers to sustain the economic growth and provide more opportunities to its citizen”"
“The country needs more foreign workers to sustain the economic growth and provide more opportunities to its citizen”, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said during the city-state’s 45th National Day.
Lee said the country has a low birth rate and is facing a shortage of Singaporean workers which can have a negative ramification to the economic growth.
“Without the inflow of foreign talents, our economy will eventually lose its vibrancy which can result to fewer opportunities to the citizen”, Lee said.
The Prime Minister said the government will control the influx of foreign workers and immigrants and will only allow those who can contribute their talents for the country’s economic growth.
“I understand that some Singaporeans are concerned on certain immigration issues and the arrival of many foreign workers. Some would ask if this means stiffer job competition and social and cultural changes”, Lee said.
“While these concerns are valid, everyone should know that citizens always come first. After all, every government’s action is for the sake of Singaporeans”, the Prime Minister added.
In his televised speech, Lee has encouraged Singaporeans “to welcome foreigners and immigrants and to work harmoniously with them.”
Previously, the government has signed the Singapore Entrepass which is a law that allows foreign businessmen to setup their companies in the country.
“If we work harmoniously with immigrants, we can keep our country dynamic, cosmopolitan, and successful. If we do this, their children will become native Singaporeans and may contribute to its growth. Remember, we ourselves are descendants of immigrants too”, Lee added.
According to a government data, the country has created more than 63,000 new jobs in the first half of the year. And to achieve the 13 to 15 percent annual economic growth forecast, Lee said the city-state will need additional 100,000 workers before the year ends.
Meanwhile, Singapore’s gross domestic product (GDP), which is the total value of goods and services produced in the country, has increased 17.9 percent during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2009.
