The Step Guys, a division of George R. Roberts Co., one of the region's leading suppliers of precast concrete products for both commercial and residential applications, celebrated a anniversary in February. The precast concrete step company celebrated one year of Maine’s largest solar array being commissioned atop the main buildings of George R. Roberts Company. The project was a partnership between the Company and SunGen, an Arundel, Maine solar provider.
“We are an industrial power consumer that recognizes that a successful company like ours has a responsibility to be aware of our carbon footprint. Our partnership has given us the opportunity to reduce our environmental impact as well as reduce our operating costs. It’s a Win-Win for us and our community” says Tim Cook, President of George R. Roberts Company.
The partnership began with Cook purchasing and installing a PV solar panel system for his own home in Poland. He purchased the items from Naoto Inoue, President of SunGen in Arundel. A friendship began between the two during the installation that evolved into the use of some precast concrete materials manufactured by Cook, in the solar installations of SunGen.
Inoue stated, “We had been working on some Purchase Power Agreements (PPA) in other states and wanted to put one together that was closer to home. The buildings and facility at George Roberts really seemed to be a good fit for one of our large commercial installations.”
A PPA involves the use of a roof-top or vacant land for the installation of a PV solar system, providing the needed electricity to the business on-site. The system is installed, owned, and maintained by SunGen.
During the year, the 638 panel solar array produced over 120,000 KW of clean solar power for use in the manufacturing plant to run the facilities cranes, concrete mixing system, and all other electrical equipment. The array was responsible for over 93% of the plant’s total power usage.
