Framing Square is Vital for Those Who Make Wooden Frame Constructions and It Is Quite Easy to Use If You Understand the Basic Mechanism
A framing square is a square of steel like flat aluminum or steel made single piece with two arms – one which is shorter (tongue) set at 90 degreed to a larger arm (blade) that is 24 inches long. Before starting to learn how to use this advance roofing technique you must know the features of this tool. Due to the printed edges of the framing square you can have an accuracy measurement level of 1/32 inch. In addition, it has a broad foot scale, an octagonal scale and a diagonal scale, and most of the framing squares have rafter tables written on the face, which provides rafter details for different roof pitches. The framing square is needed for assembling and cutting roof of a wooden frame house and it is also useful for lying out and cutting hair stringers. Usually, the material used in the composition of a framing square is aluminum or steel, due to their light weight and the arm is 2 inch wide, while the tongue is half inch. Cutting rafters, stairs or any other projects that requires several angled and square cuts can be made with the framing square.
After learning a few simple measurement techniques, it is very easy to use a framing square. Fortunately, you don’t need to be a math lover in order to use the framing square into advanced roofing processes. In order to cut a roof rafter you must follow four easy steps using only a framing square, rafter boards, 2 sawhorses and a pencil. First, you must determine the roof pitch that is measured in inches of vertical (rise) per foot of horizontal (run). For instance, if for every 12 inch horizontal measurement, the roof has a vertical slope of 4 inch, than the roof pitch has 4 inches. After you have determined the roof pitch, you will be able to cut a rafter pattern out of which other rafters can be traced and cut. Next, you need to layout the rafter tail starting by laying it out. After you have installed it on the roof, the bottom degree cut will become the horizontal and the end “plumb” cut will be the vertical. Therefore, now the degree cuts are parallel and the plumb cuts as well. It is very important that the horizontal blade to be aligned with the lower edge of the board at twelve inches and the vertical tongue at the roof pitch. Next, you must take the layout of the plumb cut and level the cut for the rafter tail so that the length of the plumb cut would be fixed by width of dashboard.
The third step would be to layout the bird’s mouth by sliding the framing square along the edge of the dashboard and layout the plumb. The breadth is represented by the horizontal distance between the two plumb cuts and the level cuts must be a minimum three and a half inches and bears directly on top plate of exterior wall. Finally, you must find the overall length of rafter by proceeding to slide the framing square along the dashboard and keep the blade at twelve inches and the tongue at roof pitch until the horizontal is stepped off in horizontal one foot increment. After you are finished measuring the net span of the rafter you need to mark a line on the plumb cut where the rafter joins to the ridge board on the vertical tongue.
You can find a lot of useful information and advice about advance roofing on the internet as there are a lot of sites specialized in the field.
