Boston, Mass, June 03, 2011 -- Speaking at a presentation in the UK last week, three senior members of Blackrock Alternative Investors spoke about the benefits of including alternative investments in a client’s portfolio, attracting support from Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA).
AAA is an advocacy and analysis organization also set up to encourage alternative investments – particularly in socially and environmentally sound projects. Their leading analyst partner, Anthony Johnson, claims that Blackrock’s commitment to supporting alternatives will be useful in spreading the word.
Beginning the presentation, entitled 'The role of alternatives in institutional client portfolios', was the head of Blackrock, Matthew Botein. He outlined some of the issues facing investors at the moment and spoke about how diversifying a portfolio to include a range of alternatives can help to reduce risk. He explained, “Institutional investors want some downside protection against rising prices as well as attractive returns. There’s a continued desire amongst UK pensions to de-risk," he said.
“Botein’s point about the unwillingness of funds to put all their eggs in one basket is interesting as it shows that fund managers are being put under pressure to include some lucrative, but less risky, alternative investments in a typical portfolio,” added Johnson, who has ten years of fund management experience.
He also claims that a range of investments in a variety of alternative assets is the best way to reduce risk. Mr Johnson suggests that fund managers consider recommending impact investing as a great option for those interested in something different. Impact investing involves making investments in projects based in emerging markets and developing countries. This investment helps to provide much needed funding to local businesses, who can then use this cash injection to expand and grow – generating returns for the investors.
Another popular alternative that has seen great returns in recent years is sustainable forestry, explained AAA. Firms such as Greenwood Management and GreenWorld BVI offer people the chance to buy an area of forested land in countries such as Brazil and Costa Rica, where timber prices are growing and demand is strengthening. The sustainable forestry plantations of timbers such as teak and eucalyptus offer alternatives to native timber, thus helping to prevent deforestation.
“The beauty of alternatives,” added Mr Johnson, “is that they do not follow the same trends and patterns as traditional investments – so are less affected by the same economic factors as equities, for example."
