There are about 90 days left for CAT 2011, which is widely recognized as one of the toughest entrance exams to crack. The CAT 2010 was held from 27 October to 24 November. It is likely that CAT 2011 test phase would also begin sometime in October. The notification is likely to be out in July, post which the registrations will begin.

This article of MBAUniverse.com shares with you how to take your CAT 2011 preparations in the right direction in the next three months.

Let us first start with those aspirants who are yet to start the preparation.

If you have just started your preparation for the CAT entrance exam, it is suggested that the first step would be to take a diagnostic test. This will help you understand where you stand today, which in turn, will help you understand the extent of efforts you need to put in for taking CAT 2011. Also, you will get to know your strengths and weakness.

Gejo Sreenivasan, Principal Consultant, Career Launcher advises, “Chalk out a study plan. Give 45 days to get all fundamentals in place with three hours of study every day on Quant, Verbal & DI/Logical Reasoning.”

When you complete the basic preparation within the first 45 days, you should start taking full length mock tests to analyze your preparation level. “Start taking full-length tests every 3 days after the first 45 days of your CAT entrance exam preparation. You must ensure that you do a thorough analysis of each test,” Sreenivasan mentions.

According to Arun Sharma, CAT expert, author of best selling CAT preparation books, you must take a mock-CAT exams to see where you have reached vis-à-vis the IIM call score. Identify your weak areas and focus on them in the first phase. Remember, every Mock-test that you take from now on will give you additional areas to focus on. Keep fine-tuning yourself.

Gejo Sreenivasan gives a month-wise study plan for CAT 2011:

Till June end and July: Work on your weak areas so that you can clear the cut-offs and take three to five mock tests easily.

August first week to September first week: Take about nine to ten mocks with a lot of small practice tests. Focus on maximizing the score in your strong areas.

September first week till CAT 2011 exam date: Take one mock test every two days and build your mock test game plan.

Let us look at the section wise preparation strategy for CAT 2011 suggested by Sreenivasan.

Quantitative Ability
The four areas of Quant viz., Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Modern Math require different skill sets.

Arithmetic: How to 'apply' formulae

Algebra: Reading and understanding the question

Geometry: Ability to visualize

Modern Math: Logical reasoning ability
You may find it easier to handle certain Quant questions and find certain other types challenging. This is because different skills are needed to tackle different areas in Quant. In the last 15 weeks, I would recommend to alternate between areas.

Day wise study plan for Quant
• Monday: Arithmetic
• Tuesday: Algebra
• Wednesday: Geometry
• Thursday: Modern Math
• Friday: Take mock test
• Saturday: Analyze
• Sunday: Revise weak areas

This, in a way, would ensure that you cover all the areas in the Quant, Verbal and DI&LR equally.

Verbal Ability
Reading Comprehension (RC) is an important part of this CAT entrance exam section. Make it a point to either solve one reading comprehension passage or/and read and analyze the editorials of a national daily. Try and ensure that the passages are from across topics with a special focus on topics that you find challenging.
Revise English usage from your fundamental books. Work twice on critical reasoning questions per week.

Time: 15 minutes to half an hour for editorials and 45 minutes to one hour for practice.

DI & LR
Solve at least one DI&LR problem every day. You must read articles, especially on business which are heavy on data and analyze them. This will keep your ‘DI cells’ on toes.

Time: Around half to one hour every day.
