It is this time of the year when the top B schools are rolling the green carpet for welcoming the students of the new batch of 2011-13.
A glimpse of the real life spent by the senior students is what the new students are looking for. Brimming with excitement, somewhere they are also apprehensive about the upcoming two years.
To take you out of this apprehension, MBAUniverse.com has started the special series, ‘MBA Survival Guide’. In today’s article, we will talk about the inside world of IIM Ahmadabad, which is considered to be the apex B-School of India, through the eyes of a student, who would be now your senior, or as per the IIM Ahmadabad lingo, tuchcha!
IIM Ahmadabad student Divya Suresh takes you through the life at IIM Ahmadabad and also imparts some basic guidelines on your survival at this very B-School and will also share her experience at IIM Ahmadabad.

Congratulations dear fachcha (that’s what we call first year students here) on having made it to a "B-School". While you must have taken a lot of advice from family, friends and senior contacts (networking is always a good thing), here are a few things we recommend you do:
Take some time off before joining to meet family and friends. Do not get too caught up in worrying about what to prepare before hand. Professors know all students may not be at the same level and will give you that allowance. So relax and save your energy for the whirlwind that is first year! Do visit some of the tuchcha-fachcha meets because so you can see some familiar faces when you get to campus. The best of us get nervous at a new places and it’s very reassuring to see a friendly smile!
One of the most unique features about the IIM Ahmadabad campus is the dorm culture and the care that seniors take of you. We had a great bunch of tuchchas who were extremely friendly and made us feel at home right from day one. Get to know as many tuchchas as possible whether it is through your city, undergrad, workplace common threads or by having as many interactions as possible (mentoring, club interviews, city meets and what not).
You will also meet some of the most experienced people from different industries as part of the faculty. We pride our faculty as not only being academics but also persons with strong practical skills in management. Remember to always be prepared with your cases and this way you can get the extra maximum value from the session and more importantly, so that you can survive a sudden faculty 'cold-call'!
Now comes the big question - how does one cope with the stress? Our answer is, you take it as it comes. The IIM Ahmadabad dorm culture and support system is the biggest antidote to stress. Your dorm-mates, study group mates and section mates are usually looking out for you and the best way to relieve stress is by going and venting to them. We would of course always recommend continuous and regular study as that does help eliminate last minute stress - but we also recognize that this is not always possible!
Do remember though that there are 24 hours in a day and you can extract a lot out of it including six to seven hours of sleep by managing your time effectively. Finally, take some time to pause, watch the pretty Ahmadabad sunsets, play some sports, and jam in the music room or whatever catches your fancy; because at the end of the day, you can still savor refreshing unpredictability of college life as opposed to the monotony of work!
So we look forward to seeing you all on campus soon and welcoming you to the ride of your life!
