Over time, breasts can sag, due to various changes to the body. Some of the most common changes include pregnancy, weight-loss, or simply the aging process. Patients who experience these changes may benefit from mastopexy (better known as "breast lift surgery.")
Dr. Andrew Turk, of the Florida-based Naples Cosmetic Surgery Center, says that breast lift surgery trims excess skin and tightens supporting tissue, giving patients the more youthful, uplifted breast contour they are looking for. Following surgery, Dr. Turk says that patients will have firmer, "perkier" breasts that look and feel natural.
Dr. Turk says that breast lift surgery does not significantly alter the size or shape of a woman's breasts. Women who want to change their breast size or shape should consider undergoing a breast augmentation or reduction, he says. Ideal candidates for breast lift surgery are otherwise healthy women who want to correct issues, such as sagging, uneven, or misshapen breasts.
Dr. Turk typically recommends that women who are planning to have children in the future postpone breast lift surgery. This is because pregnancy and nursing can cause changes in the breasts, and disrupt the results of a breast lift. Dr. Turk also advises women to have realistic expectations about the surgery, and what it can do for them.
Dr. Turk performs breast lift surgery under general anesthesia. The surgery takes about one to three hours to complete, although this will depend on the size and shape of the breasts, as well as the degree of sagging and the amount of excess skin. The type of incisions used during surgery will also depend on a patient's specific needs.
After Dr. Turk makes the incisions, breast tissue will be removed and reshaped, in order to achieve the desired breast contour. The nipple and areola will also be moved higher, or resized. Any excess skin is trimmed to create a tighter, more defined appearance.
Following surgery, patients will likely experience side-effects such as bruising, soreness, and swelling for a few days. Patients will likely need to wear an elastic bandage, or surgical bra, for a week or so after surgery. Stitches will be removed after two weeks. Dr. Turk adds that most patients will be able to return to work about a week after surgery. Results of this surgery will be visible immediately.
Dr. Turk recognizes that undergoing plastic surgery is a highly-personal decision, so he works closely with all of his patients to guarantee they receive the best treatment possible.
