The month of July, the seventh month of the year, has started. This is an indication that you have even lesser time left for CAT 2011 to start. The announcement of the exam is expected anytime and hence you need to work hard on those areas which you are not comfortable with. In this MBAUniverse.com article, we will give you the much needed tips on the mind boggling section of Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning.

As by now you have already realized, DI & LR section tests your ability to analyze the data and to know how fast and accurate decision maker you are. Let us know the type of questions which are asked in the CAT exam. Nishit Sinha, Author of CAT preparation books like ‘The Pearson Guide to Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning for the CAT’ and IIM Lucknow alumnus gives an overview of the question types of the DI & LR section.

-- Observation based questions: These questions require simple and careful observation of the data.

-- Interpretation and Calculation (IC) based questions: These questions require basic analysis and calculation with data.

-- Explorative questions: These questions will pose a hypothetical scenario, and may expect you to use, observation, interpretation and calculation.

Sinha states the different steps which you should follow while solving a question on Data Interpretation set: Data Calculation, Data Analysis and Data Observation. “Some of the Data Interpretation questions can be done at the Observation level only, and some require you to go till calculation level,” he states.

You should not expect to reach the absolutely accurate value and learn the skill to reach till the approximate value. “Develop the approximation skills. At least half of the questions in any exam can be done without going through the actual calculation,” Sinha mentions.

While you solve the questions on DI & LR, you must keep in mind the following rules which have been suggested by expert Vinayak Kudva, Product Head, IMS Learning and Nishit Sinha.

1. Read the title carefully

2. Take your time and read both the questions and data set carefully. Understand what you are being asked to do before you begin figuring out the information.

3. Check the data and types of information required. Be sure that you are looking at the right part of graph or chart i.e., on paper columns or rows or proper lines.

4. Read the parameters listed along with axes and the scale. This is the most important points as generally one assumes standard scale as 1 unit = 100 or 1 unit = 10. Also the scales of two axes might be different.

5. The footnotes give the additional information for particular data. This also explains the jargons and lists the formulae that might be needed to solve the questions asked.

6. Check the units required. Be sure that your answer is in thousand, millions or whatever it is that the question specifies.

7. Must observe all the questions in the set. You may find that one or two questions are of ‘observation’ type. Solve those questions first. Solving these questions will acquaint you with the data set as well as will give you the solution of those observatory questions too.

8. Before you jump upon any final calculation, you must observe the options to understand the scope of approximation that the question offers.

9. Try to narrow the final value to eliminate the options.
