The number of applicants for CAT has been continuously witnessing a decline since the past few years. The CAT 2010 saw a total of 2.06 lakh candidates registering for the exam. This was a drop of around 15 per cent compared to the CAT 2009 registration figures which was 2.42 lakh. The CAT 2009 registration figures had similarly witnessed a marginal dip in comparison to CAT 2008. The registered takers of CAT 2008 were 2.46 lakh.
With the recent announcement by IIM Calcutta of CAT 2011 dates and announcement of changes in CAT exam pattern that are aimed at simplifying the entrance test, the question that is rocking the minds of educators as well as MBA aspirants is: Will the CAT registrations rise this year?
To find out what lies ahead with respect to CAT 2011 numbers, MBAUniverse.com talked to the CAT 2011 Convener and experts.
According to Prof. Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convener, “There were many reasons for the dip in numbers in past few years including the economy, placements, the technical glitches in the first year of computer based CAT to name a few. But things are definitely looking up now and so are we. Students are now much more familiar with the computer based CAT. This year, three new test centers have been added in Bhilai, Dehradun and Jammu. The number of branches of Axis Bank has also been increased to 201 so that it is easier for the candidates to access the CAT Vouchers.”
The CAT prep centers are also indicating the likelihood of a positive scenario this year as test prep enrollments have risen this year compared to last year.
Kamlesh Sajnani, Managing Director, IMS Learning Resources says, “This year, the trend is very positive. There is a 10 per cent rise in the enrollments this year, compared to the CAT 2010 enrollments.”
Expressing the same sentiment Gautam Puri, Vice Chairman, Career Launcher says, “The positive trends are in the right direction.”
With the economy going strong, experts are pointing to a likely rise in the CAT 2011 numbers. Gautam Puri mentions, “The placements this year have been much better compared to last year. This is one of the reasons that students are again hopeful about doing MBA.”
“Also, there are new B-schools opening up, like the new IIMs, which is also increasing the chances for the MBA aspirants. The number of IIMs have gone up to 13 with the new IIMs - IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Raipur, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Trichy now functional. With this the number of seats has also gone up. There are now total of 2800 seats in all the IIMs, including the new ones,” said Mr. Puri.
The other reasons which will make the MBA aspirants feel comfortable about taking CAT this year is the change in the pattern of the exam from previous three sections to two sections and the successful conduct of CAT 2010.
Prof. Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convener said, “The new pattern of CAT 2011 will help the test takers perform better. Often the candidates cannot focus on one section properly thinking about how much time to spend on the other sections and then they again come back to the previous section for revision. In the new pattern, the test takers will have no option but to put their entire concentration on one section for 70 minutes without thinking of the other section.”
According to Mr. Puri, “The fear of facing a technical glitch, resulting in cancellation of the test etc. has been abolished now owing to the successful conduct of CAT 2010. Now the candidates are feeling more confident towards taking the computer based test.”
