CAT is known for changing its pattern. This change in pattern has always jolted the CAT takers as it leads to changes in exam preparation strategy.

The recent CAT 2011 announcement and with it the announcement of changes in the exam pattern has led to a tsunami of questions in the MBA aspirant community. There are questions coming like: Will there be the option to navigate through questions in the same section? Can I mark questions along the way and come back to them as long as sectional time limit persists? Which questions will come first in each section?...and many other such questions.

With the aim to demystify the CAT 2011 pattern MBAUniverse.com spoke to Prof. Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convener and IIM Calcutta professor. Prof. Moorthy shared some very crucial information related to CAT 2011, which will help the test takers in properly planning their exam taking strategy as well as preparations.

Allaying the fears that the new pattern is not test taker friendly Prof. Moorthy said that the new system is very student friendly. “You can make the most of each section within the given 70 minutes for each section. What is important for you to take note is that you can review and change your answers in each section within the given time period, which is 70 minutes.”

Sharing another important info on CAT 2011 Prof. Moorthy also confirmed that the sections will come in the following order: Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation as the first section, followed by Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.

Now that Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning have been merged with Quantitative Ability and Verbal Ability, the question remains, whether the question sequence in each of the two sections will follow a particular order or will be random.

Responding to this, Prof. Moorthy confirmed, “The questions within the sections will be mixed randomly. The 30 questions in each section will not follow any particular order and can come from anywhere from any area. There is no particular segregation of areas within the questions.”

Prof. Moorthy, in an earlier interview with MBAUniverse.com, had mentioned that the similar pattern was followed during 1995-96. The pattern has been brought back in the computer based exam of CAT 2011 so that the CAT takers can spend most of the time in one section concentrating on the same.

“The reason for making the sections ‘timed’ is that the CAT takers spend most of the time on their strong areas and lesser time on their weaker sections. This led to a skewed score,” said Prof. Moorthy.

On the reasons for decreasing the number of sections from three to two Prof. Moorthy had said, “The reason why we have reduced the number of sections from three to two is because we want proficient students at our IIMs, who would be equally competent in both Quantitative Ability as well as Verbal Ability. Till last year we have seen many students who had skewed efficiency.”

The duration of the CAT 2011 exam will be 140 minutes, which was earlier 135 minutes. 70 minutes will be given for each section and the test takers cannot move to another section unless the 70 minutes of the first section get over. The total number of questions will be 60 -- 30 in each section.
