Entry deadline is 3 p.m. Thursday, August 25, 2011. Winners will be announced the first week of September, and will be invited into a studio to record their song and attend a photo shoot.
“The stereotype is that homeless people are just vagrants, probably with drug or alcohol addictions, and people don’t have a lot of sympathy for that,” says Mike White, who founded the contest. “But people just like you and me are becoming homeless every day for a variety of reasons including loss of a job, natural disaster or health issues that lead to large medical bills . It could happen to any of us.”
After becoming friends with a local chef who later lost his home and was living on the streets, White learned that everyone can be vulnerable to homelessness. White started writing a poem, which turned into a song, which transitioned into a full musical. He has written the storyline and lyrics to songs for the musical, and is collaborating with musicians to help write the music. Song titles include “Gambling Man”, “I Miss Home”, “Just to Pay the Rent”, “Stand Up Kind of Man”, “That’s When the Rains Came”, and “Welcome To My Life”. White’s vision is for the musical resulting from this contest to be performed live on stage, and even go on tour to raise funds for homeless shelters.
Grand prize is $500 in cash, a $1,000 media package with The BUZZ Magazine and www.iwantaBUZZ.com, a $250 gift card to a local Jacksonville recording studio, and a $100 Pro Music gift certificate. Other prizes include:

• A $1,000 advertising package in The BUZZ Magazine
• Ten hours in a recording studio
• A ¼ page ad in The BUZZ Magazine for a month

“On any given night there are less than 900 shelter and transitional beds available for nearly 4,000 homeless men, women, and children in northeast Florida,” says Penny Kievet of City Rescue Mission. CRM is one of a handful of downtown shelters providing services to area homeless and needy. White’s company, Client Focused Media, is a business partner with CRM and is co-sponsoring the contest, along with The BUZZ Magazine and Pro Music.
