In the pursuit of this aspiration, Titan Alarm regularly reviews industry publications to discover current studies and trends with respect to systems being utilized for fire safety so that its own equipment will be commensurate with these developments. We recently came across an article which may be located at the following website: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/mobile/iphone/story.html?id=5151244. This article entitled, “Fighting Fire With Fire” describes the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of an expert by the name of George Hadjisophocleous to study the causes and effects of fire as well as numerous methods of fire detection, prevention methods of extinguishing fires. This article describes the incredible and continuing voyage of discovery of this insightful engineer as he continues to study the impact of various methods of fire detection and termination of existing fires.
In the article, the author references numerous important facts about fires which we at Titan Alarm believe are highly significant and compelling and merit repetition. The reason we believe these facts to be of such importance and urgency is because in so many cases, the fires were deemed to be preventable. As such, when such tragedy can be averted, logic would dictate that proper preventative measures should be taken to safeguard against fire related issues. These facts include but are not limited to the following:
The article indicates that between the years 2000 and 2009, 40% of the fatal fires in the Ontario area occurred between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The article continues to state that half of these fires were considered to be PREVENTABLE by the Office of the Fire Marshall. The article indicates that 86% of 833 fatal fires involved residential fires. The article isolates the causes of many of these fatal house fires to the following: cigarette smoking (17%), arson (13%) cooking (10%), mishandled matches or lighters (6%), electrical wiring problems (4%) or candles (3%). The article states that in 36% of these situations the smoke alarms were either not present or not operating properly.
The article references a 2004 study by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology which found that the typical modern fire smoulders longer, but burns hotter and faster than when smoke alarms were introduced in the 1970s. Ultimately, these facts suggest that a significant percentage of fatal fires may be prevented with the proper preventative measures being taken. This does not even address the issue of non-fatal fires which also present significant dangers to homes and families. Titan Alarm LTD is proud to be part of an industry that is working toward becoming part of the solution to reducing theses fire related tragedies.
