Sterling Currency Group founder Ty Rhame created his company philanthropy program in December 2011 as a means of giving back to the community. Each month, Sterling posts several fully vetted charities on its website and invites its customers to vote for their favorite. The charity with the most votes receives a $5,000 donation from Sterling Currency Group that month. With the May 2014 donation, SCG Gives Back has donated $150,000 to charities.
The idea for the program came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Ty Rhame's personal commitment to supporting nonprofits. "I was brought up believing in the importance of giving back to my community," says Rhame. "I also have a family foundation that supports education and nonprofits in my city, so it was just natural to institute a philanthropy program for my company as well. In both my personal and professional life, I am deeply committed to giving back."
The SCG Gives Back Program has been an unmitigated success and is going strong after two and a half years. To date, Sterling has donated $150,000 to many worthy nonprofits such as St. Jude Children's Hospital, Make-A-Wish, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Salvation Army, the USO, Wounded Warrior Project, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Nothing but Nets, Hire Heroes USA, Canine Assistants, Meals on Wheels, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Tib Holland, Development Director of Canine Assistants, said, "Since Canine Assistants does not charge anything for the services we provide, we must raise all funds necessary to support the placement of our dogs. Our sponsorships are instrumental in covering the costs associated with training, boarding, lifetime medical care, and placement of a service dog with an individual who has a disability. We want to thank the Sterling Currency Group for their generosity. It has had a tremendous impact on the lives of our recipients and their families."
