It seems that adoption nowadays has become more of a fashion thing than actually taking home a child that was unwanted by his birth parents. Everyone does it and the fuss that exists around it among Hollywood stars does not improve the situation. Keeping this in mind, from all the states in the United States of America, the one with the most problems with adoption is, surprisingly, not California, but Louisiana.
Being a Louisiana licensed social worker may prove to be quite challenging. People here not only adopt more often, but they leave children on the streets more often. The rate of abandonment is approximately 46% higher than the United States average, according to a survey conducted by the Department of Social Workers. Some children get adopted right away, but most of them end up in the system up to their teenage years. Some never get to be adopted and reach the age of 21 in a foster home. Those children, unfortunately, grow up to be burglars, bank robbers, thieves and murderers. Because of the harsh treatment in the foster home, they join gangs and start doing drugs., that is why the criminality rate in the state of Louisiana is much higher than in other states. Of course, not all children in foster care end up like this or in juvenile prisons. Some of them learn something from the counseling they get and grow up to be important people, even CEOs of well-respected companies.
That is actually the job of a licensed professional counselor in LA. Counseling helps the children get passed the abandonment issues and they even go as far as gaining the ability of forgiving their parent for the harm that they did when they left them in the street. But not all children respond well to counseling and there is nothing worse for a counselor than to see a child he or she worked with for so many years become one of the many criminals and gang members in the state of Louisiana. This does not necessarily mean they have failed at their job, it just means that those children have made a choice. Whether the choice was right for wrong is for society to tell and them to decide. The counselor did his job of presenting the possibilities and the choices one has to make in his life, but the children are the ones who make the choice. The entourage is also an important factor in making those choices and if all the wrong people surround you you end up making their mistakes and becoming a social pariah. Making the right choices is easy. Get a job; make something of your life. You are not “cooler” if you shoot people on the street.
