Discrete Sport, LLC, a rider owned and conceived headwear brand in the winter sport industry, is proud to announce the addition of Kalen Thorien to their athlete program.
Originally from Idaho, but now seen skiing the Wasatch on any given day, Kalen is a great representation of the soul skier in all of us. Finding her way out to Utah with a mere five dollars left in her pocket, one thing was on her mind: Skiing. From washing dishes and living in employee housing, to now being a sponsored athlete, it’s been quite a journey for this young lady.
Kalen started her career as a competitive big mountain skier, but her focus quickly shifted to backcountry skiing and shooting with photographers.
“I could never find my comfort in competitive skiing. I didn’t have the proper mind set for it. I realized skiing was the one thing where I could be myself, relax, and just breathe. It was my time to be outside in the mountains and express myself. That’s why shooting really began to appeal to me. I was able to work with someone to create beautiful pictures and try and show people what skiing means to me.”
Kalen can be seen in various advertisements for Solitude, Brighton, and Patagonia. As well as numerous magazines such as Freeskier and Ski.
Her goals for this upcoming season include copious amounts of shooting with various photographers including Scott Markewitz, Lee Cohen, and Jay Beyer. Exploring the nooks and crannies of the Wasatch and various mountain ranges. Heading to Colorado and Washington with the Surface Skis crew. And armed with a GoPro and some cameras, she’ll be posting weekly edits on her website, www.kalenthorien.com. Be sure to look out for the bright green Doyonator submerged in Utah goodness!
