1. Exfoliate well prior to fake tanning to ensure an even, longer lasting tan. This removes all the dead skin cells and ensures you are tanning the newest freshest layer of skin. Remember, you should also always apply your fake tan on clean, dry, unmoisturised skin.
2. Apply a barrier cream onto areas with dry or harder skin, such as your elbows, knees, ankles, etc. as these areas tend to absorb more of the fake tan product. Do not apply any other creams, lotions, perfume or deodorants onto your skin before tanning as they can often affect how well your tan develops.
3. Always apply fake tan using a tanning mitt, or where a mitt is not available use a pair of vinyl gloves instead. This will help protect your palms and finger nails from getting tanned and ensure even coverage.
4. Blend the fake tan onto your skin evenly, making sure that you don’t apply too much product to your elbows, knees, ankles, neck, wrists, fingers, toes etc.
5. Allow your fake tan to dry for at least 5 minutes before getting dressed.
6. Wear dark, loose-fitting clothes after tanning to allow the fake tan product to fully absorb into the skin without rubbing off onto your clothes.
7. Avoid physical activity after applying the self tanning product. Excessive heat or sweating can often affect how well your tan develops.
8. Do not bathe or shower for at least 12 hours whilst your self tan is fully developing. Doing so may wash off the product whilst it is still doing its job.
9. For a darker tan, simply re-apply the fake tan product the following day.
10. Moisturise daily and exfoliate every 3-5 days depending on your skin type to ensure your tan lasts longer, wears smoothly and evenly, and fades naturally.
Remember: Fake tan will tan you where you apply it, so streaks or patches are caused by uneven application or insufficient exfoliation prior to applying the fake tan product – even with the very best fake tan. No fake tan product will streak if it is applied evenly and correctly.
