POLICE have warned people to be on their guard against cold-callers who they claim are charging too much for burglar alarms.
Essex Police's crime reduction officer, Tony Ellis, said the companies claimed to be working with the Home Office, but this was not true.
“Most people who have been contacted by these companies have had the good sense not to allow them to visit their home, but on the odd occasion where work has been carried out, the cost to the customer has been exorbitant.
“One man was charged £3,000 in installation and monitoring costs.”
