On the occasion of the inaugural Corrosion UAE Conference, we are delighted to highlight the key issues and speakers that will be featured at this unique event.
“How far can R&D go in the fight against corrosion?”
Prof Bob Cottis from University of Manchester, Prof Moustafa El Gammal from the University of Alexandria, Dr Zaki Ahmad from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dr Ashraf Biddah from the United Arab Emirates University, Prof Siamack Shirazi from the University of Tulsa and Dr Fathia Mohammad from the American University of Sharjah will discuss the potential and perspective of their research projects in the exclusive R&D: An Exclusive View on Tomorrow panel discussion.
Among the topics discussed, Dr Ahmad from KFUPM will present some of his R&D work on nano-structured coatings which has been conducted under his guidance to introduce TiO2 particles in the alkyd system for dust and water repellence in the desert environment for transportation pipelines.
“How is the oil and gas industry tackling corrosion and its staggering cost?”
Dr Chris Fowler, President of NACE International, George Hays, Director General of the World Corrosion Organization and Dr Abdulhameed Al Hashem from the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, who will share figures from the World Bank, will be the Keynote Speakers opening the event with their unbiased views and analysis on the economics of corrosion and the importance of holistic planning for corrosion prevention.
During a recent interview with us, Dr Ahmad from KFUPM shared his views on maintenance costs and suggested that “to reduce the maintenance budget which is indeed very high, sustainable methods of corrosion protection have to be worked out. This will greatly help the risk management policies and bring down the maintenance cost. Also a big emphasis should be given for accelerated methods of coating and surface inspection using sensors to display round the clock information on the integrity of the structures.”
“What is new in the material engineering field and how can the industry successfully employ it?”
Dr Mazhar Mehmood, Project Director of the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences, who was recently awarded a Presidential Medal for his leading role in science and technology by the Federal Minister for Science and Technology Azam Khan Swati, will share with the audience some of his recent findings on Corrosion-Resistant Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Alloys.
“Top corrosion experts to be awarded at Corrosion UAE 2011. Do you know a winner?”
Key experts in the field of corrosion who contributed to advancements in corrosion management and control will be awarded during the social reception on February 27, 2011. The Energy Exchange is currently accepting nominations that will be then submitted to the Technical Committee of the event for the Corrosion UAE 2011 Awards.
