People's wellness has always depended on the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in air.Good-quality air for breathing is essential for well-being, alertness, and concentration, but it is not always found in indoor spaces. Stale air in schools, universities, offices, or meeting rooms often leads to fatigue or headaches, as air in poorly ventilated rooms often has a higher CO2 concentration. A properly ventilated room will have about 21 percent oxygen and only 0.03 percent carbon dioxide, but our breath, made up of 14 percent oxygen and 5.6 percent carbon dioxide, is a major contributor to indoor CO2 levels. Poor ventilation thus leads to an exponential increase in the CO2 concentration and quickly to poor indoor air quality.
The proportion of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere was relatively constant at 280 ppm (parts per million) for the past 650,000 years. However, since the beginning of industrialization, the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere has significantly risen, as much as two percent annually in recent years. This is noticeable not only outdoors, but also in indoor spaces. G. Lufft, the company specializing in measuring and control technology based in Fellbach, has taken up this issue and developed the OPUS20 TCO data collector, which measures indoors CO2 concentrations and sounds an alarm if limits are exceeded. The measuring device is housed in a plastic case, can operate on batteries or AC, and measures temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 content in indoor spaces.
In 1858, German chemist Max Josef von Pettenkofer defined CO2 parameters for indoor spaces at 1,000 ppm, a value which indoor air quality evaluations have confirmed. Classrooms and lecture halls should not exceed this maximum limit of 1,000 ppm, while the maximum allowable concentration is 1,500 ppm in office spaces and conference rooms. Should these values be exceeded, immediate action should be taken to improve air quality and to prevent complaints of headaches, loss of concentration, fatigue, or irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract. G. Lufft GmbH recommends continuous recording of CO2 levels and increasing the fresh air supply when the parameters are exceeded.
Lufft's OPUS20 TCO data collector is well-suited to monitor temperatures and CO2 concentrations in schools, day cares, offices, nursing homes, doctors' offices, hospitals, or private homes, and facilitates controlled air provisioning. The measuring device and its matching accessories are available worldwide from Lufft's Online Shop.
About G.Lufft Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH:
G. LUFFT Mess- und Regeltechnik has been dealing with the production of climatological measuring equipment since its foundation by Gotthilf Lufft in 1881.
The precision workmanship of highly skilled specialists has enabled the LUFFT label to be known and the products to be purchased worldwide. The LUFFT products and equipment are to be found wherever atmospheric pressure, temperature, relative humidity and other environmental factors require to be measured or recorded.
To keep in pace with the market and the modern technologies, electronic devices have been developed parallel to the mechanical products according to the basic principle "Tradition and Innovation".
