The history of the Luau is a long and storied one and it says a lot about Hawaii and its people. A luau is a great feast which showcases many of the different types of authentic Hawaiian cuisine. These days, luaus vary in their presentation and in the types of foods that are served. But one thing remains true, a luau is the perfect time for friends and families to come together to enjoy good food and entertainment. This is one of the most prevalent values found throughout Hawaii and one of the reasons luaus are still so popular today.
The luau is a tradition which dates back as far as the 1800's. And as such, luaus are deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and history. The first luau in 1819 was important for a variety of reasons. Before it, men and women were not allowed to dine together due to religious doctrine. In addition to this, there were foods that people of common birth were not allowed to eat—foods reserved solely for royalty. King Kamehameha II ended these practices when he invited commoners of all types to feast with him in what became the very first luau. The first luau was a historic event that paved the way for one of the world's most popular and enduring celebrations. If you'd like to know more about luaus and their place in Hawaii dining culture, you can read an informative article entitled "Dining is an Integral Part of a Hawaii Resort Stay" for a more detailed explanation.
General goodwill and community are ideals that are foremost in the hearts of the Hawaiian people and the ideals which luaus thrive on. And in order to be a successful Hawaii resort restaurant on any of the islands your establishment has to set these ideal as its cornerstones. This is something that Donn Beach was aware of and why he was able to find such great success with his Don the Beachcomber restaurants. Don the Beachcomber is the prototypical Tiki restaurant. And most of the Tiki restaurants operating today are based on it in one way or another. That's one of the reasons that Tiki restaurants are as celebrated now as they were decades ago.
