Whether you stay at a two star hotel, or a five star hotel in London, unfortunately there is still the risk of sharing your bed with bed bugs as bed bugs in hotels are on the rise. The problem is that it doesn't always stop there. The chances are that you will end up taking bed bugs home with you as people unwittingly carry bed bugs in their luggage and clothes. Following a trip to an expensive hotel, you could find that you have an infestation that you need to deal with.
Unfortunately you cannot claim the cost of getting rid of your new pest on either your travel or home insurance, even though it was the result of your trip.
According to reports by HLA Pest Control in London, bed bug infestations in hotels and guest houses is at an all time high following the Olympics and establishments are struggling to cope with their bed bug problem. There has been a 25% increase in call outs for the last three months compared to the same period in 2011.
If you stay in a hotel and are concerned about bed bugs, make sure you inspect the bed when you first go into your room. Bed bugs are difficult to spot during the day, so you may need to look again at night when they come out to feed. Check the creases in mattress, gaps in the headboard or any cracks that appear between the skirting boards and walls. You may notice small red dots on the sheets after you have slept in the bed and must look out for small bites to your arms or any areas of your body that have been exposed.
If you do see any evidence of bed bugs, don't just change rooms, change hotel. Chances are they will be in several, if not all, rooms in the hotel. If you have evidence of bites once you get home, you must throw your suitcase away, and wash your clothes in water that is at least 60 degrees or have them dry cleaned.
Akeel Jaffar from HLA Pest Control in London says:
"Many people on holiday or staying in hotels get bites that they mistake for mosquitos or other allergies. It's important to be 'bed bug aware' and look for them wherever you go. If you do bring them home with you, call the experts and report the problem to the hotel you stayed at so that they can manage their pest problem. Whenever you arrive at a hotel, the advice is to thoroughly inspect the room, checking all creases and crevices and also to check at night. Look out for tell tale signs such as a sweet odour, small marks on the bed, bites and little white shells of skin. The last thing you want is to take these pests home with you!"
