The 7th edition of India Art Fair closed on a high, with over 80,000 visitors, and 25% stronger sales than previous editions, indicating a noticeable revival in the contemporary sector. A major trend to emerge is the increase in younger collectors (with the largest number of buyers under 30 since the fair began), and younger artists, not just from the tier-1 cities, but as far a field as Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Jaipur. Purchases also came from further afield with a significant amount of Indian art going to buyers from the Middle East, Doha, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia, illustrating the geographical depth of engagement Indian art is increasingly enjoying. In the 7th edition over 100 international patrons attended the fair from museum groups including the Guggenheim Bilbao (Spain), Santa Barbara Museum of Art (USA), Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia) and Tel Aviv Museum of Art (Israel).
In addition to being a commercial sales platform, India Art Fair is as much about engagement, accessibility and education. A prestigious Speakers' Forum, combined with a strongly curated artistic projects programme added substance to India Art Fair's status as a progressive platform for a cultural engagement and artistic education. This important element of India Art Fair's mission extends to all ages and the fair was pleased to welcome 16 school groups and thousands of students who visited from Delhi and around the country to learn and engage with art in India.
Founder and Director of India Art Fair, Neha Kirpal said:
"India Art Fair is concerned equally with the expansion of the cultural consumer-base through accessibility and engagement, as well as the creation of a platform from which the Indian art market can grow and develop. It was particularly gratifying this year to see substantial evidence of a younger wave of both artists and collectors engaging at the fair, and positive feedback from all the galleries with regards to the levels of serious interest shown by buyers is encouraging. Our aim is to invest in and develop the next decade of cultural consumers in India to capitalise on what has become a thriving and dynamic foundation."
