A petition is being circulated on the internet to ask the State to acquire Alamo Plaza from the City of San Antonio, in the hopes that proper respect can be given to the battlefield where our patriots died in 1836. The Alamo is more than the church building, and includes Alamo Plaza, where the main battle occurred. The City has ignored the Plaza for years, and has recently hired a New York Consultant who has recommended plans that cater to the needs of the local retailers, and suggests no reconstruction of the south wall which he refers to as "faux history."
The petition was initiated after Councilman Carlton Soules alerted organizations that the City Council is trying to pass this plan quickly, with little public input. Because of the "firestorm" that was ignited from all of the calls, the City pulled the agenda item regarding Alamo Plaza.
A better solution would be the acquisition of Alamo Plaza by the state, so the entire site, including the church we all know as The Alamo, could be become one complex to be treated with respect and properly identified for visitors. The petition was written by Sarah Reveley, who filed the complaint with the Attorney General about the neglect of preservation by the custodians, which resulted in the new state law that put the Alamo under the charge of the Land Office. When she received the news from Councilman Soules, she wrote the Governor for help and he suggested that "If you would like to see this property transferred to the General Land Office, the state agency that maintains the Alamo, you may want to contact your state legislators."
