If you have a boat and need to protect it from marine growth and floating debris, Barnacle Barrier is the solution for you.

Our recent article on Gather.com introduces American boat owners to Barnacle Barrier - a great barnacle protection method that is superior to anything out on the market today in a number of ways.

Barnacles and other marine growth are the bane of boat owners around the world. Any rigid object immersed in temperate waters will attract barnacle larva, which then will attach themselves, thrive and reproduce indefinitely. This can be a major problem for boats, since encrusted hulls are heavier, have significantly increased drag in water and can even end up structurally compromised. This is a particularly severe problem for wooden vessels, since some types of molluscs (erroneously called "shipworms") can bore through wood, and cause similar damage to termites. Outboard motors can also become severely fouled and compromised due to marine growth, leading to expensive repairs or even irreparable damage.

Boat owners have traditionally dealt with this by either removing the boat from the water on trailers, lifting it up on boat lifts or inflatable pontoons, or using antifouling hull paint that repels marine life by simply poisoning it.

None of these solutions is optimal - trailers are a lot of work and need parking space, lifts are expensive and can capsize or snap, inflatables can get punctured and, again, capsize, and bottom paint has a true cornucopia of disadvantages: it poisons the sea , needs to be reapplied every year or so, increases hydrodynamic drag, and lowers the value of your boat.

Barnacle Barrier is the best of many worlds. It's extremely simple - a floating oblong frame with an air-operated gate at one end, a large polymer barrier attached to the frame, and a pump. The barrier is filled with water and sinks down; the boat is pulled within the frame, it's sealed off by raising the air gate, then the water is pumped out, leaving your boat bottom "shrink-wrapped" and dry, while still floating in the sea. This means less danger of capsizing, a low profile (Barnacle Barrier only rises 3 or so inches above water), less chance of being judged an eyesore, and much less hassle with permitting. In fact, most jurisdictions don't require a permit for Barnacle Barrier at all!

There are many more advantages. Barnacle Barrier is completely non-toxic and environmentally friendly; it works automatically, with the pump shutting down when all the water is evacuated; it can't flip over or sink, and has no large inflatable elements that can be punctured; the flexible barrier doesn't attract nearly as much growth as a rigid boat hull, it can function with a large amount of marine growth attached, and can be cleaned much more easily than a hull if necessary; in case the flexible barrier is punctured, it can be repaired, or, if the damage is too extensive, easily replaced.

The only drawback of Barnacle Barrier is that it's not the optimal solution for very turbulent water conditions. If you have a boat and need to protect it from marine growth and floating debris, come and check out Barnacle Barrier today!
