The word 'krill' means whale food in Norwegian and was considered only worthy for whales, sharks, and mantas. But recent research has proved that these tiny little crustaceans are the best source for Omega3 fatty acids.
The fatty acids present in krill are known to control heart diseases, stroke, cancer, PMS, osteoarthritis, lower cholesterol, decrease swelling, and make blood platelets less sticky. It is said that packaged in the form of phospholipids that are easier to absorb and also contain other nutrients like choline and antioxidants. It is these nutrients that make them a better choice when compared to fish oil. They're also easily absorbed by the body and hence smaller doses of krill oil are sufficient.
"But it's just not any other krill that is effective. Antarctic krill is considered to be the best possible Omega3 fatty acids. It contains a very high amount of astaxanthin- the antioxidant that fights infection, inflammation and other diseases," says a spokesperson for K48.
Krill sourced from the Antarctic is also known to be environmentally sustainable. With Antarctic krill, there is no problem of over-harvesting. Scientists have found that if the total weight of these crustaceans in the Antarctic is more than the weight of all humans on Earth!
"Our krill oil is made using the deep sea krill that is harvested in an ecological process that is sustainable. This krill is then cold pressed to produce the finest quality Omega3 supplements in the market" adds the spokesperson.
It is not only the source that matters, but also the process of harvesting that determines the quality of the krill. "The krill that we harvest belongs to the Euphasia species that live an average 10 years longer than krills that live in the South Pole. We have more than 15 international patents on the process. These processes make sure that the enzymes do not eat into the nutrients in the krill and the resultant oil is one of the most bio-active and potent source of Omega3 fatty acids," says the spokesperson.
