New Lymphedema Treatment Online Resource Now Live

Worldwide, more than 200 million people suffer from lymphedema, a medical condition that results from impaired flow of the lymphatic system. But awareness of the condition is not as common as its prevalence: Per announcement today, LymphedemaTreatment.net, a centralized, online resource for information regarding lymphedema treatment, is now live.
"We wanted to provide people with the latest information on lymphedema," said Mary Walters, LymphedemaTreatment.net information curator and site moderator. "Lymphedema sufferers and their families can use our site as a go-to resource to find treatment information, local doctors and equipment suppliers, support groups and more."
Symptoms of lymphedema include mild, severe or even disfiguring swelling in one or more extremities. Primary or inherited lymphedema is present at birth, while secondary lymphedema develops as a result of injury to or dysfunction of the lymphatic system. "Not many people know about the condition until it affects them personally," Walters continues. "Our goal is to not only inform the public but to provide timely, up-to-date information that that people can use to lessen lymphedema's potentially debilitating effects. Prompt treatment is essential."
Humans have approximately 500-600 lymph nodes distributed throughout the body, with clusters found in the neck, chest, underarms, abdomen and groin. Lymph node injuries can result from infections, disease or invasive surgeries. For example, breast cancer treatment is the most common cause of lymphedema in the U.S. While there is no cure for lymphedema, manual lymph drainage, proper skin care, compression treatments and physical therapy may help reduce swelling and discomfort.
