For those looking to eliminate excess fat and skin in their abdominal region, an abdominoplasty, also known as a 'tummy tuck', has long been a popular option. Where in a traditional procedure, drains are used to collect excess fluids that accumulate after the surgery, Stony Brook's Dr. Mark Epstein has developed a technique to perform abdominoplasties without the use of drains, tubes or binders. Dr. Epstein took a moment to explain the benefits of this unique approach.
"For years, drains and tubes had been used to collect excess fluids following a tummy tuck procedure," explains Dr. Epstein. "A constant hassle for patients, drains need to be recorded, declogged and, most importantly, they can be remarkably uncomfortable." What Dr. Epstein sees as an unnecessary, burdensome step, he went on to explain how his practice no longer relies on these devices.
"Since 2011, our practice has eliminated the use of post-operative drains," reports Dr. Epstein. "While some wonder where this excess fluid now goes, in reality, it doesn't go anywhere. Using advanced surgical techniques, we have actually reduced the level of fluid production in the first place, and any fluid that is produced, is absorbed by the body."
Of course, eliminating drains isn't the only thing that sets Dr. Epstein's approach apart. He went on to explain a bit more of what his tummy tuck patients can expect following their procedure. "Another important part of our approach deals with the use of narcotic pain medication following surgery. With several serious side effects, we have been able to significantly reduce the need for narcotics with a revolutionary new drug called Exparel. Injected directly into the surgical wound, patients can enjoy long-lasting pain relief, without the use of a traditional pain pump." Dr. Epstein's practice has also abandoned the used of uncomfortable binders, which he believes offer no significant benefits, but rather, can cause problems with circulation to the abdominal skin flap.
Asked to speak on his practice's approach to tummy tuck surgery going forward, Dr. Epstein closed with this: "One of our most important practice goals is remaining on the cutting-edge of cosmetic medicine, and allowing our treatment methods to grow and evolve as new technologies become available. That's why when it comes to tummy tuck surgery - or any of the services we offer - patients can expect the highest level of care today, tomorrow or ten years down the line."
