High-speed trains ensure a fast and reliable connection between cities in many countries. The more monocentric a country's regions are, the greater the need for rapid travel and transportation. Therefore, many countries have invested in the development and deployment of high speed networks in recent years. China is a pioneer in this field and is setting new standards for modern railway transport.
High-speed trains that reach speeds of nearly 250 mph are now standard in the People's Republic of China. With 5,800 mi of rail lines in service, China is the world's current record-holder. By 2015, the high-speed rail lines will double to 11,000 mi. In extending the existing network of high-speed rail lines, the construction companies are relying on Lufft sensors to monitor environmental conditions. Special wind measurement systems need to be used to ensure that the trains remain on track even at high speeds and winds. In the current business year alone, 400 Lufft compact weather stations, including the WS400-UMB, WS500-UMB, WS600-UMB and 30 Ventus-UMB wind sensors, have been put into use to ensure reliable wind measurement along the high-speed lines. Environmental data are processed in real time by wind measurement stations placed every five kilometers. This data is then transmitted to the control center so that the train speed can be automatically adjusted to the current weather conditions.
Crucial to using sensors on high-speed lines are absolute reliability, long-term stability and the highest degree of accuracy. Because these weather measurements are critical to train safety, Lufft has installed redundant systems on many routes. Some wind measuring stations in China consist of paired all-in-one sensors, such as the WS400 and WS500 or the WS500 and WS600. If one sensor breaks down, the other sensor's data are transmitted. In addition to wind direction and the wind speed, the compact weather stations also measure air temperature, relative humidity, the intensity, type and amount of precipitation, and barometric pressure. Accurate monitoring of the environment conditions is vital for secure passenger and freight transportation.
In challenging climatic conditions with ferocious winter temperatures, a Ventus UMB ultrasonic anemometer is used. While other mechanical products are quickly covered with ice after snow storms, Ventus-UMB remains free of ice because it is automatically heated when a critical ambient temperature is reached. This ability to heat itself and the robust construction provide for reliable transmission of wind speed data even in the coldest climate conditions.
In the coming years, China will continue extending its railway network. A major project is the railway from Lanzhou to Urumqi, where a new 1,000 mi high-speed line is being built under critical environmental conditions. Lufft is providing the wind measurement systems for this project as well and will continue to help ensure safer transportation of persons and property.
About G. Lufft GmbH:
Since it's founding by Gotthilf Lufft in 1881, G. Lufft GmbH has been the leader in the production of climatological measuring equipment. Lufft's capacity for innovation and precision has helped its products establish the solid reputation they enjoy around the world. The company's products can be found in use wherever variables such as air pressure, temperature, relative humidity and other environmental factors need to be measured. In line with its commitment to the company motto of "Tradition and Innovation," electronic products have now joined their mechanical ancestors and show the same Lufft quality in a digital age. Together with its subsidiaries in the U.S. and in China, the company has 80 employees. In November 2012, G. Lufft GmbH was awarded the German Standards Brand Prize and was named a "Brand of the Century". More information can be found at: www.lufft.com
