A recent American Heart Association (AHA) fact sheet update reveals that obesity in the United States is growing at an alarming rate—5 times higher than statistics recorded in 2008-2009. The fact sheet also shows that of American adults, age 20 and older 154.7 million are overweight or obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher.

According to Dr. Jeremy Korman, Medical Director at LA Bariatric Center in Marina Del Ray, California—morbid obesity brings with it an increased risk of a shorter life expectancy, as well as a host of other health problems, some considered irreversible. For those who weigh or exceed twice their ideal body weight, the risk of premature death is more than doubled.

Dr. Korman encourages anybody facing severe weight issues to ask themselves the question "Am I morbidly obese?" There are a number of medically accepted criteria to define morbidly obese as well as a number of morbid obesity treatments, according to Dr. Korman.

- Are you more than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight?

- Do you have a BMI of over 40?

- Do you have a BMI of 35 or over and have experienced weight-related negative health effects such as high blood pressure or diabetes?

- Do you have trouble reaching or maintaining a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically supervised dieting?

If you've answered yes to any of these, you may be morbidly obese. However, Dr. Korman has outlined certain surgeries that can help patients shed their extra weight. Gastric bypass surgery restricts food intake and calorie absorption by reducing the size of the stomach via bypass. This procedure has been shown to be effective in helping morbidly obese patients lose significant amounts of weight.

Another treatment option is Lap-Band surgery—a laparoscopic surgery where a gastric band is put around the stomach to shrink its capacity. Lap-Band surgery can also be effective in helping to lose, and control weight in morbidly obese patients.

The AHA notes the economic burden of being morbidly obese, with an estimated rise in healthcare costs that could account for 16% to 18% of US health expenditures—up to $957 billion by 2030.

The price paid for obesity in the long run is more than just in dollars. Dr. Korman urges overweight Americans to consider the cost of not acting in response to serious obesity. Higher medical bills, more sick leave, and less productive work are just the start: there is also the non-financial cost that you pay in lost energy, health complications, discomfort and shorter expected lifespan.
