The REALIZE band is a safe, minimally invasive surgical weight loss option that limits the amount of food a patient can consume without cutting or stapling the stomach. The REALIZE band surgery is performed laparoscopically—Dr. Korman places an adjustable gastric band around the upper part of the stomach in order to divide it into two sections and restrict food intake. REALIZE band patients lose an average of 40 percent of their excess body weight the first year after surgery. These results can be maintained via a balanced diet and a regular exercise regimen.
Many patients chose the REALIZE band over other surgeries because it is minimally invasive (the surgery is performed laparoscopically so the incisions are minimal. The band is also adjustable and reversible so no matter what the patients' circumstance are the REALIZE band can be customized to their needs.
Ideal recommendations for The REALIZE band are that the patient has a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, which means he or she is approximately 100 pounds overweight. Patients must also be at least 18 years old. According to Dr. Korman some patients who may not meet these requirements may still be eligible for the REALIZE band procedure.
