It is estimated that nearly 50% of the adult population are snorers. Often people who snore also suffer from underlying sleep disorders—although men and overweight patients are at the highest risk of developing habitual snoring problems, according to Dr. Robert Guida, NYC plastic surgeon.
Most often snoring is due to some sort of obstruction of airflow. The obstruction may be in the nose due either a deviated nasal septum or to nasal polyps. The obstruction could also be in the back of the throat due to extra tissue on the soft palate causing blockage of airflow when the patient is lying flat. Often the extra tissue is due to an enlarged tonsil or adenoids, or a long uvula and soft palate.
In order to correct snoring, an accurate diagnosis as to the cause must be obtained via nasal endoscopy and a correlating sleep study. Sometimes snoring is a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea: a serious medical disorder where the patient stops breathing intermittently throughout the night.
If sleep apnea is diagnosed there a number of treatments that may be tried, including instructions to avoid alcohol, sedatives or heavy meals late in the day. Weight loss may also be a suggestion, as well as trying different sleeping positions.
The use of dental or oral devices may be tried to keep the airway open. Suggested treatment may also include the use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Because these treatments can be cumbersome and long term often patients choose a surgical option to stop snoring or remedy sleep apnea.
This could include surgery on the nose, such as fixing a deviated nasal septum or reducing the size of the nasal turbinates, surgery on the palate and tonsils, or a uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)—which is the trimming or removal of tissue in the throat including the tonsils, soft palate, adenoids and uvula.
With proper diagnosis and treatment, the outlook for those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea is excellent. Snoring can be improved and serious medical complications can be avoided.
Surgery can be performed to correct physical abnormalities of the nose and throat that cause obstruction during sleep. A surgeon may perform a UPPP. If the obstruction is in the nose, fixing a deviated nasal septum and reducing the size of the nasal turbinates (turbinectomy) may be the appropriate procedure.
