The name may be cutesy, but the results are flat-out beautiful. The recently FDA-approved cohesive breast implants, nicknamed as the "gummy bear implants," are growing in popularity due to their more natural appearance and shape-retaining consistency.
The gummy bear implant got its name from its texture prior to placement, which is remarkably similar to that of the soft candy. Its firmer consistency allows the gummy bear implant to retain its shape over time, as gravity can distort the shape of traditional standard implants.
Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, a New York-based cosmetic plastic surgeon, offers cohesive breast implants as one of his many breast augmentation services. He notes that the newly available implants are specially designed and shaped to have a form that lends a more natural slope to the breast.
Unlike saline implants, cohesive breast implants are less likely to result in rippling, a common issue with standard implants that causes the skin tissue that's over the implant to display an unsightly "wavy" appearance. A new generation of silicone implants, gummy bear implants are made of a gel that contains more chemical connections between the silicone molecules, so the shaped implants remain firm while still creating a soft, natural appearance that looks more like real breasts.
