While traditional breast reduction surgery left a large, T-shaped or "anchor pattern" scar, the short scar method provides just that — a breast reduction that leaves 50% less scarring than previous techniques. Dr. Nolan Karp, a board-certified plastic surgeon from KCNY Plastic Surgery in New York, speaks about the benefits of this type of breast reduction surgery.
"Women with excessively heavy breasts often tend to experience several accompanying issues, including back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as poor posture and breathing problems," explains Dr. Karp. "A breast reduction not only addresses the aesthetic appearance of the breasts, but also helps to reduce or completely eliminate the health issues tied to overly large breasts."
There are several types of breast reduction options available, and one of the most recent procedures is the short scar breast reduction, also known as the "vertical" or "lollipop" technique. Dr. Karp is on the cutting edge of the development of new surgical procedures, and has developed and popularized revolutionary short-scar breast reduction techniques.
"The short scar breast reduction is performed in about two thirds of my patients," Dr. Karp says. "It's ideal for patients who have moderately large breasts, and the operation works especially well for younger patients."
A traditional reduction procedure leaves a vertical scar down the breast, as well as a horizontal scar underneath the breast, with these two scars meeting together to form an anchor-shaped scar on each breast. A short scar breast reduction, however, creates a vertical scar, which reduces the total length of scarring by 50 percent.
During the short scar procedure, the vertical incision extends up and circles the areola area, so that after the excess tissue is removed, the breasts can be sculpted to look as ideal as possible. This incision lends the procedure its "lollipop" nickname.
Dr. Karp and his associates at the KCNY Plastic Surgery conduct physical and medical evaluations and thoroughly consult with each patient to carefully determine which breast reduction surgery will best achieve the results they desire. Whether it's mainly for aesthetic reasons or to resolve back or shoulder problems, the short scar procedure offers a more comfortable, less scarring solution.
