The skin of the eyelid is the thinnest, and most sensitive, skin on the entire body. As a result, this area is often the first to be exposed to sun damage. Sun damage not only causes the skin to look aged, but it can also cause serious damage, including skin cancer of the eyelids.
Skin cancer of the eyelids is fairly common, according to Manhattan oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Bruce K. Moskowitz. "Tumors that are located on either the eyelid or the eye socket should be evaluated and treated," says Dr. Moskowitz, "If cancer is present, treatment should start as soon as possible. Even benign tumors on the eyelids can cause damage to the eye, including blocked tear ducts. A biopsy will have to be performed to determine whether or not the tumor is cancerous."
"Eyelid tumors are generally not painful, though they can grow larger or change color with time," Dr. Moskowitz says, "The tumors can also bleed, develop a crust, or discharge pus." He adds that most cases of eyelid tumors are basal cell carcinomas that form on the inside of the inner eyelid. Though these tumors are malignant, Dr. Moskowitz says that they will rarely ever spread to other areas of the body.
Most patients with eyelid tumors will have to undergo surgical removal, according to Dr. Moskowitz. "If there are any defects following the removal of the tumor, your surgeon will have to reconstruct the eyelid or orbit so that both function properly," Dr. Moskowitz says.
He continues, "It is extremely important to find a surgeon who is experienced not only in eyelid tumor removal, but also in reconstructing the area where the tumor was removed. I am pleased to offer patients both oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, for both cosmetic and medical issues, including eyelid tumors."
