Kirkwood Mountain Resort’s 2300 skiable acres lie within Eldorado National Forest boundaries which mean the resort is already held to strict standards when it comes to environmental impact. With the very real threats of global warming and shorter winters, and a business that depends on a reliable snowpack Kirkwood tries to not only meet those strict standards, but exceed them to help protect our environment and our winters. Kirkwood is proud to be associated with a number of environmental initiatives that help us offset our impact, lessen our effect on the environment, and support renewable non-polluting energy sources. These initiatives also encourage our guests and employees to be accountable for their carbon footprints.
Kirkwood is one of 4 Tahoe ski resorts, and 21 North American ski resorts that participate in the Bonneville Environmental Foundation Ski Green program. To participate ski resorts must support some type of renewable energy, give their guests opportunity to offset their carbon emissions, or both. At Kirkwood, when a guest purchases a lift ticket, they are given the opportunity to purchase a $2 mini green tag. The money raised from these ‘SkiGreen’ tags goes toward purchasing energy credits that go directly into the energy grid. Basically, guests have the opportunity to offset the fossil fuels they burn getting to the mountain.
Over the past four years, Kirkwood Mountain Resort has partnered with the National Forest Foundation to work to improve wildlife habitat, treat invasive weeds, restore watersheds, and enhance recreation opportunities on the Eldorado National Forest. With $1 from each paid night going towards this cause, guests at Kirkwood have contributed over $30,000, which the National Forest Foundation has leveraged with over $15,000. Working together, these investments have gone a long way to improve the Eldorado National Forest.
It’s the little things that go a long way and over the past few seasons, Kirkwood Mountain Resort has been working to educate and empower both employees and guests when it comes to the environment and energy conservation. Small initiatives like sensor light switches and energy efficient appliances and light globes have been put in place. Employees can also be rewarded with a ‘Sustainability Award’ for hard work and dedication in this area. New this season, Kirkwood also set up ‘recycling’ and ‘trash’ bins throughout the resort.
