Florence - August 13, 2010 - As a dynamic epicentre of design, the ancient city of Florence is continuing to inspire a new generation of students. Gaining ideas from historical designs, museums and monuments, students can revisit visual techniques from classical art and architecture whilst exploring the interaction of the historic and the contemporary. An exciting and modern interplay of graphics results in a unique design aesthetic. The Florence Institute of Design International is a design institute located in the heart of Florence, with a curriculum specially created to take advantage of the school’s historic setting. The institute specializes in graphic and interior design with classes in English.
Students comment on the unique opportunity to relish the Florentine masterpieces, “What a great way to learn about a city than standing right in front of Botticelli’s "Venus", Michelangelo's "David", and other famous works”. The institute itself is located in an antique frescoed palazzo, and offers courses that have been revised and revisited to provide students with the latest graphic design programs to work effectively in the world of visual arts. The courses cover theory, print, layout and colour schemes, and students learn through solving a variety of design problems. In the words of one Graphic Design Masters student “The Florence Institute of Design was an amazing educational experience. The courses were great and the teachers are experts in the subjects they teach. What is so great about the school is the access to the resources around us. A great example is the art history course. The school has helped me to further my education and knowledge. I don’t think I could have picked a better place to study”.
Recent students of the Master of Graphic Design showcased their skills in a student magazine titled ‘Sala Verde’. The magazine is a visual interpretation of various aspects of their experience in Italy. Laura Ottina, one of the institute’s graphic design teachers explains “Sala Verde is the culmination of a years’ work and experimentation in different disciplines including typography, photography, illustration and art history, all of which have been influenced by the diverse backgrounds of the students”. The students come from four different continents and drew inspiration from “a fascinating city with its rich historical heritage and lively contemporary scene…and there was so much to explore and be inspired by: the food, the language, the new friendships, the shopping, the Italian culture, lifestyle and traditions, the local people, the night life, the surroundings…”. The Sala Verde can be seen on the Florence Institute’s website - http://www.florence-institute.com/index-9.html
